Florida Keys Wreck and Deep Sea fishing
Wreck fishing is a type of offshore fishing because it requires being off anchor and that the motors stay running. What makes it different from standard offshore fishing is instead of driving around looking for signs of fish such as birds, weed lines and floaters near the surface, Jeff is targeting species of fish that live on or near the bottom. Instead of sight fishing or trolling, Captain Jeff uses his GPS and fish finder to drop baits near the bottom and target species that live on or near structures such as sunken ships, airplanes and rock caverns. Captain Jeff typically combines Reef fishing first thing in the morning with Wreck Fishing later on a 3/4 day 6 hour trip. This allows you to catch some smaller but very good eating fish first and then hunt for big fish to get yourself some great photos! Jeff offers a 3/4 Day Reef and Wreck fishing combo for online bookings but feel free to customize your trip with Jeff if you have further requirements.

Marathon, Florida is an excellent place to wreck fish. There many sunken boats, ships and even some airplanes that are home to very large hungry fish. There are also piles of bridge rubble from the construction of Marathon’s world famous Seven Mile Bridge that are home to many fish. Whether you are looking for some tasty large fish or just want to bend the rod and test your mettle against a huge grouper or a massive shark Captain Jeff can put you on the fish.
Amberjack
Amberjack are well known in the Florida Keys as one of the hardest fighting fish pound for pound. These stubborn “Reef Donkeys” often weigh in anywhere from 50-100+ Lbs. If you are looking for a workout this is the fish to target! Captain Jeff likes to practice catch, photo, and Release with these fish as their food quality is not very high and he considers them a Trophy Sportfish. If you want a replica of your fish a fiberglass mount can be arranged without having to kill it.
Mutton Snapper
Ranging from 10-25lbs, Mutton Snapper on the wrecks are larger, older, and smarter than the Muttons on the reef. Once hooked they will make several powerful runs before you can get them turned around and going in the right direction. Targeting Muttons on the Wreck is a great way to put some very high quality flaky white meat in the fish box if you can wind fast enough!
Permit
Permit can be caught using live crab in the late spring as they swim in the water column above sunken wrecks while they spawn. Permit are considered Sportfish by Captains in the Florida Keys as they do not like to kill them during such an important spawning phase. With an accurate measurement, your Trophy can be replicated to a fiberglass mount without having to harm the fish.
What You Can Catch Deep Sea Fishing
Deep Sea Variation
Want to go further out past the wrecks and look for fish in depths anywhere from 600-2000 feet? Captain Jeff can help you with that too! Below are some of the species you can catch in the really deep water with Captain Jeff, typically using using an electric reel. In very deep water, wind and current conditions have a major impact on how successful your trip will be. Because of this Jeff will also keep an eye out for opportunities to catch pelagic species such as Mahi, Tuna, Sailfish and Marlin to make sure you have a great catch.
